Solving a Rubik’s Cube is challenging enough for humans, but engineer Mike Dobson took it a step further by creating a robot that can solve it in under 12 seconds—using only LEGO Mindstorms pieces.
Dubbed “Cubestormer,” this remarkable creation connects to a PC that processes the cube’s configuration and determines the solution. The robot features four mechanical “hands” that can rotate the cube in all directions with precision and speed.
A camera focused on the cube captures the current state of each face, sending this information to the computer, which then calculates and executes the optimal solving sequence.
Technical Highlights
- Built entirely from LEGO Mindstorms components
- Solves puzzles in under 12 seconds
- Uses computer vision to analyze the cube
- Features four manipulator “hands” for complete cube control.
