TED Talks: Do Schools Kill Creativity?

Do schools kill creativity? | Sir Ken Robinson | TED

A TED talk about education and how we are teaching kids to grow out of creativity in school.  The notes I took during watching the video is that:

  • Communication is just as important as literacy to teach children
  • Kids are not afraid of being wrong which lets them be more creative
  • Kids will take a chance and if they don’t know something, they will take a go at it and they are not frightened of being wrong
  • If you are not prepared to be wrong you won’t come up with anything original (love that quote)
  • We don’t grow into creativity we grow out of it
  • Schools of today were created in order to meet the needs for industrialism
  • Women tend to be better at multi-tasking (thicker corpus colusum)
  • The story about the girl who was born to dance at the end was great.  Everyone just has to find their passion and what they were born to do

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

May 1, 1969: Fred Rogers testifies before the Senate Subcommittee on Communications

For Christmas, my mom and dad got me “The World According to Mister Rogers: Important Things to Remember”.  Kevin Rose just Tweeted about the video above.

“In 1969 the US Senate had a hearing on funding the newly developed Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The proposed endowment was $20 million, but President Nixon wanted it cut in half because of the spending going on in the Vietnam War. This is a video clip of the exchange between Mr. Rogers and Senator Pastore, head of the hearing. Senator Pastore starts out very abrasive and by the time Mr. Rogers is done talking, Senator Pastore’s inner child has heard Mr. Rogers and agreed with him. Enjoy”

My Nephew Evan Wanting To Open His Present

Evan Choo Choo Present

My mom showed Evan Tyler’s videos of him opening presents and saw the first one of him getting a Thomas the Tank train.  He saw the gift under the Christmas Tree that looked like the one he saw in the video and wanted to open his “choo choo” present.  Pretty cute.

Tyler Christmas Presents

When I was up in Portland for Thanksgiving my parents sent some Christmas presents home with me.  I was talking to my mom yesterday who asked if I had opened them yet which I hadn’t.  She said we could open them yesterday as my son Tyler and I are going up to Portland tomorrow afternoon for Christmas.  So yeah I had his presents in my closet so he wouldn’t get into them if you are wondering where we are opening them.  Without Lana’s shoes and clothes, it is like another room in the house.  He gets pretty excited about a few of them and by the end, he obviously figured out the whole tear off the wrapping paper to get to the toy trick.  🙂  There are seven videos all together so if you are fascinated by this type of thing click the more button below the second video.
